Nobody has ever before asked the nuclear family to live all by itself in a box the way we do. With no relatives, no support, we've put it in an impossible situation. --Margaret Mead
This blog is a foray into some of the most personal yet politically and socially controversial topics of our time: family. Through a sociological perspective, we explore questions concerning the definition, history and dynamics of the family in North America. Main topics and questions in this blog are guided by a graduate-level seminar in Sociology of the Family at McGill University taught by Professor Anna-Liisa Aunio.

Sociology of the Family--Welcome dear students!
Welcome to the Sociology of the Family blog! This is a family (read: graduate seminar) endeavor that will aid us in our quest to define, debate, and come to terms with the changes and challenges faced by the "family" as a social unit in North American society. We commence on Monday, September 13, 2010 with an introduction to the family. From there, we broach definitions, histories, theoretical perspectives, and several popular as well as academic debates about family structure, dynamics, and outcomes. Over the next 13 weeks, the 13 of us will become a family (in some senses of the word) in this effort. To this end, please help your classmates get to know you by filling out your blogger profile before class begins. The course syllabus and readings will be available at Copie Nova (coursepack) and the university bookstore beginning on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. I look forward to meeting all of you!

Hello, I just went to Copie Nova and to the McGill bookstore for the second time (I went yesterday) and they do not have any course material. I also checked in Copie 2000 and they have nothing. Could you please let us know when it is available? Thanks. See you on Monday, Claudia
ReplyDeleteHello, I am unsure where the readings for this week are posted. Will they be on WebCT? Thanks!
